The owner of the striking Dogon granary door wished to display it as the top of a coffee table. As the feature of the table was to be the Dogon door, its support needed to be simple but complimentary to its primitive and geometric carving.
The material I chose was some wrought iron, beautifully textured naturally by weather and time giving a rustic simplicity. I made a diamond shaped punch, which leaves an indent with a raised centre which reflects the geometry of the door; this was used as a simple relief on the legs.
The joints were either tenoned and riveted or bound with windings of wrought iron wire. The table was topped with 10mm thick toughened glass.
